<b style="color: #073763;">Xmas Gift Guide</b> With the likes of Bulletstorm, Gears of War 3 and Frozen Synapse narrowly missing out on this list of top ten games, it would seem 2011 has been a pretty decent year for videogames.<br /><br />The vulture-eyed PHT reader will, however, notice the list is dominated by sequels and franchises – for which I make no apologies. It's simply representative of the industry at present, and, in my opinion at least, reflective of their individual merits – each and every inclusion granted not because of the game's pedigree but in spite of it.<br /><br />If you'll excuse the aside, it's also worth mentioning the ubiquity of sequels usually heralds the end of each gaming generation. With next-gen details presently limited to speculation, and with the PC still heavily restrained by multi-platform development, the industry is in real danger of stagnating.<br /><br />While it has successfully navigated cyclical troughs before, it has never done so in the face of such stiff competition. This year's top ten might represent an industry at the top of its game, but another year of reboots and sequels could do irreparable damage given the inexorable rise in smartphone and social gaming.<br /><br /><b><span style="font-size: large;">1. Batman Arkham City</span></b><br /><br />Arkham City wasn't simply a much bigger game than Arkham Asylum - just about everything from the original was improved. New stealth moves and gadgets made Batman feel more invincible than ever, and the already excellent one-button combat was polished and refined into arguably the most elegant fighting system in videogame history.<br /><br />The Joker's relegation to cameo appearance deprived the narrative of its most memorable antagonist, but it was a natural concession to the real star of the game: Arkham City itself. Battlefield 3</b></span><br /><br />Have you heard the one about Battlefield 3's Easter Egg? Apparently, there's a full single-player game tucked away on the menu screen right above Multiplayer. It's called Campaign, or something. I mean, who'd have thunk it, eh?<br /><br />Seriously, though. Ignore the instantly forgettable single-player - BF3 is all about multiplayer mayhem. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3</b></span><br /><br />The minute I've finished writing up MW3 in my top five I'm off to the shower with a bottle of drain cleaner and a Brillo Pad. That's how dirty and ashamed I feel. Especially when its inclusion comes at the expense of games like Frozen Synapse and DiRT 3.<br /><br />You see, like the Metacritic trolls, I was ready to pour hate on the series for all the right reasons: repetition, repetition, repetition. But try as I might, I just couldn't. From the peerless production values and neat narrative conclusion of its single-player to its honed-to-perfection multiplayer, MW3 oozes inimitable quality. Dark Souls</b></span><br /><br />The uncompromising follow-up to the most difficult RPG of all time, you'd be forgiven for protesting about Dark Souls inclusion in this top ten. But this isn't a democracy, I'm afraid. This is my list, and Dark Souls fully deserves its place.<br /><br />Sure, you need three hands to play it. One hand to wield the Drake Sword, one to clench the Crystal Ring Shield, and one to type the boss names into YouTube. And yes, it's likely most players gave up long before the end. But no other game was as compulsive and satisfying. Deus Ex: Human Revolution</b></span><br /><br />With its intricate neo-noir narrative and distinctive black-and-gold cyber renaissance palette, Deus Ex: Human Revolution was easily 2011's most memorable game. While it lacked the radical, genre-defining innovation of the original Deus Ex, Ubisoft Montreal nevertheless delivered a game with both obvious affection for Warren Spector's work and considerable merit of its own.<br /><br />It wasn't perfect, however. Misguided boss battles ran contrary to the guiding principle of freedom, and a flaccid middle-third temporarily diluted the narrative drive. Other SSL enabled ports are more unlikely to use an SSL Accelerator (like the POP3S, SMTPS, ... or the secure database port).</li></ol><span style="font-size: large;"><b>Counter measurements:</b></span><br /><br />No real solutions exists. Those black lines are functional, and are indicative of a whole new antenna. This aims to address the dropped calls and spotty signal of last year’s model. Not everyone suffered from a poor signal but if you did, then you’ll be pleased to hear the new set-up works splendidly, giving the iPhone something which performs like one of the strongest antennas around.<br /><br />So it reliably makes and receives calls – hurrah! Signal strength and battery life, the bare minimum for a phone, are both strong with clear voice quality. Daily charges are still recommended but it won’t need a lie-down by lunchtime, unlike some smarties. They’ve also moved just enough to mean that some cases, including early editions of Apple’s own bumper, won’t fit. The buttons match the positions on the Verizon iPhone 4 sold in the US and newer bumpers are designed for both versions. But if you’re planning to recycle last year’s case, depending on when you bought it, it may not fit.<br /><br /><span style="font-size: large;"><b>Internal affairs</b></span><br /><br />Other changes, and there are several, are all internal. First of all, there’s a new processor. Well, not quite new, it’s the A5 chip found in the iPad 2. Just as it made the second iPad much faster than the first, the peppy A5 ensures the iPhone fast and responsive. It also works against Skype users who aren't currently logged in, as long as they've used the VoIP program in the past three days. The system is able to link an individual Skype user to specific BitTorrent activity, even when they share the IP address with others over a local area network that uses NAT, or network address translation.<br /><br /><blockquote>“We have shown that it is possible for an attacker, with modest resources, to determine the current IP address of identified and targeted Skype user[s] (if the user is currently active),” the 14-page paper stated. “In the case of Skype, even if the targeted user is behind a NAT, the attacker can determine the user's public IP address. Such an attack could be used for many malicious purposes, including observing a person's mobility or linking the identity of a person to his internet usage.”</blockquote>The scientists found that it was relatively easy to find the ID of most Skype users when their email address and birth name are known to the attacker. Additional information, such as the target's city of residence, sex, or age, brought greater accuracy to the task.<br /><br />They then called the target's Skype account using a customized system that sent specially crafted packets. By examining the headers of the data that was returned, they had no trouble determining the person's IP address. Because the scientists prevented a TCP, or transmission control protocol, connection from being fully established during the probing, targets had no idea their Skype accounts were being tracked. The scientists devised the system so that it could track 10,000 people for about $500 per week.<br /><br />After learning the IP addresses of individuals, the scientists tapped BitTorrent sites to track the specific downloads of addresses in their database. Even when one of the IP addresses was shared among many users on a single network, the method was able to single link a unique Skype user to a specific download by, among other things, collecting identifiers known as infohashes from BitTorrent networks.<br /><br />The scientists said Google Talk, MSN Live and other real-time communication applications may also be susceptible to the technique, but they singled Skype out for containing what they called “a major privacy vulnerability.”<br /><br /><blockquote>In a statement, Adrian Asher, chief information security officer in Microsoft's Skype division, said: “We value the privacy of our users and are committed to making our products as secure as possible. Just as with typical internet communications software, Skype users who are connected may be able to determine each other's IP address. Through research and development, we will continue to make advances in this area and improvements to our software.”</blockquote>The research paper, which is titled I Know Where You are and What You are Sharing, made several recommendations for improving Skype's ability to conceal the identity of its users.<br /><blockquote>“One solution that would go a long way is to design the VoIP system so that the callee's IP address is not revealed until the user accepts the call,” it stated. “With this property, Alice would not be able to inconspicuously call Bob. Then the scam expanded to include Starbucks, which has locations both in Canada and the US.<br /><br />Similar to previous Facebook scams, you need to share the link with your Facebook friends before proceeding. The webpage in question tells you this is necessary to get the free voucher.<br /><br />The scammers’ goal is to drive more traffic towards certain sites. This is how the scammer earns his or her money: a commission for every survey completed, every product purchased, and/or every account compromised. They also use them to spread malware and obtain personal information.<br /><br />As I've always said, if you see a scam like this one, report it. Then go check your own Wall to make sure you’re not spreading the scam; the sooner you clean it up and unlike the page, the better. After uploading your various documents, media files, and the like, you can easily access them online, share them with others, stream media to a mobile device, and so on.<br /><br />There's even a new feature that allows iPhone 4S and iPad 2 users to wirelessly stream Box.net files to an Apple TV.<br /><br />Now for the bad news: although it's easy to enough to select files and folders to upload to your account, you must do so using a Web interface or your iDevice (which is limited to uploading photos).<br /><br />There's a Dropbox-like Box Sync client for Windows and Mac, but it's available only to those who purchase Business or Enterprise accounts.<br /><br />The lack of desktop syncing does limit Box.net's appeal, no doubt about it, but it's hard to complain too much about 50GB of free storage. Hackers succeeded in verifying sign-in IDs and passwords, but Sony said credit card information was "not at risk" during the attack. "JavaScript is is a cornerstone of the Web today, and it will continue to be for a long, long time."</blockquote>Bak bristled at some of complaints about Google's approach to creating Dart in-house and not through a more collaborative approach.<br /><br /><blockquote>"I don't buy the argument that before writing any line of code or designing any features, you put it in a standards committee, because that would just be a lot of screaming," Bak said. "You have to have coherent design before you start adopting Dart as a standard."</blockquote>Making a standard is a goal, though. "It will be fairly lonely to create a standards committee when here's only us in it. We first have to get the backing of other partners before we can make a standard that's useful," he said.<br /><br />Google is releasing Dart now for the next step in its maturation: outside feedback and participation. "We hope the other browser vendors will be excited," Bak said, adding that today is the first that Google has shared details about Dart with them or others.<br /><br />Google is evaluating the best way to integrate Dart directly into its Chrome browser, something Bak is keen on. One reason: it will enable a "snapshotting" technology that dramatically improves a Web app's start-up time. Snapshotting involves taking an application and "serializing" it into a single block of data.<br /><br />In one test of snapshotting, a 55,000-line Dart program loaded in 60 milliseconds compared to 640 milliseconds without it, Bak said. A conventional JavaScript program would load in comparable time as Dart without snapshotting, he said. "I can see a lot of optimizations that 'll be applicable to Dart" when it's integrated directly into a browser, he added.<br /><br />Here's Bak's quick description of Dart: <br /><br /><blockquote>Dart's design goals are:<br /><br />• Create a structured yet flexible language for Web programming.<br /><br />• Make Dart feel familiar and natural to programmers and thus easy to learn.<br /><br />• Ensure that Dart delivers high performance on all modern Web browsers and environments ranging from small handheld devices to server-side execution.<br /><br />Dart targets a wide range of development scenarios: from a one-person project without much structure to a large-scale project needing formal types in the code to state programmer intent. To support this wide range of projects, Dart has optional types; this means you can start coding without types and add them later as needed. We believe Dart will be great for writing large web applications. </blockquote>Dart programs will be able to run within a Dart virtual machine--essentially a layer of software that acts as a computer to execute programs. They'll also be able to run using a compiler that translates Dart code into JavaScript code for browsers that don't support Dart, Bak said.<br /><br />Google's Chrome browser has served as a vehicle to get the company's technology such as WebM and SPDY useful for at least a portion of Web users. Though the 2010 Dart/Dash memo said Google planned build Dart support into Chrome, Bak was cautious about making any definite statements beyond saying browser integration brings benefits. It's notable, though, that Bak led development of Chrome's V8 JavaScript engine, so he's hardly a stranger to the Chrome team or to the challenges of improving Web-app speed.<br /><br />Building Dart into Chrome could let Google build Dart versions of its advanced Web apps that--if the language lives up to its billing--could be better than those Web apps today.<br /><br /><blockquote>"Google has a lot fairly big Web applications. That includes Gmail and Docs. I hope many of these apps will be converted into Dart," Bak said--but cautioned that was his personal option, not an explicit plan.</blockquote>Introducing new programming languages is tough. Though many hope that computing can improve by reforming or replacing languages, the incumbent power of existing languages is strong. Educating thousands or millions of programmers, building developer tools, and creating supporting libraries of code all can take years. As newer languages such as Java, JavaScript, and C# attest, though, it is possible.<br /><br />Google also is trying to gain a foothold for Go, a programming language geared more for native software that today would most likely be written with C or C++.<br /><br />Dart is designed to address several shortcomings Google sees with Web programming today, according to the <a href="http://www.dartlang.org/docs/technical-overview/index.html">Dart technical overview</a>: <br /><br /><blockquote>• Small scripts often evolve into large web applications with no apparent structure--they're hard to debug and difficult to maintain. In addition, these monolithic apps can't be split up so that different teams can work on them independently. It's difficult to be productive when a Web application gets large.<br /><br />• Scripting languages are popular because their lightweight nature makes it easy to write code quickly. Generally, the contracts with other parts of an application are conveyed in comments rather than in the language structure itself. As a result, it's difficult for someone other than the author to read and maintain a particular piece of code.<br /><br />• With existing languages, the developer is forced to make a choice between static and dynamic languages. Traditional static languages require heavyweight toolchains and a coding style that can feel inflexible and overly constrained.<br /><br />• Developers have not been able to create homogeneous systems that encompass both client and server, except for a few cases such as Node.js and Google Web Toolkit (GWT).<br /><br />• Different languages and formats entail context switches that are cumbersome and add complexity to the coding process. </blockquote>The priority right now is to hear what the rest of the world thinks and to get them participating in Dart's development, Bak said.<br /><br /><blockquote>"At this point it is mostly the language we are focused on," he said. It hopes to distribute 10 million of the devices to students over the next few years.<br /><br /><blockquote>"The rich have access to the digital world, the poor and ordinary have been excluded. Aakash will end that digital divide," Mr Sibal said. </blockquote>The Aakash has been developed by UK-based company DataWind and Indian Institute of Technology (Rajasthan).<br /><br />It is due to be assembled in India, at DataWind's new production centre in the southern city of Hyderabad.<br /><br /><blockquote>"Our goal was to break the price barrier for computing and internet access," DataWind CEO Suneet Singh Tuli said.<br /><br />"We've created a product that will finally bring affordable computing and internet access to the masses."</blockquote>The company says it will also offer a commercial version of the tablet, called UbiSlate. It is expected to hit the shelves later this year, retailing for about $60.<br /><br /><span style="font-size: large;"><b>Usability questions</b></span><br /><br />Mr Sibal says the device will enhance learning in India.<br /><br />Experts say it does have the potential to make a huge difference to the country's education, particularly in rural areas where schools and students do not have access to libraries and up-to-date information.<br /><br />But critics say it is too early to say how the Aakash will be received as most cheap tablets in the past have turned out to be painfully slow.<br /><br /><blockquote>"The thing with cheap tablets is most of them turn out to be unusable," Rajat Agrawal of technology reviewers BGR India said.<br /><br />"They don't have a very good touch screen, and they are usually very slow."</blockquote>Critics also point out that an earlier cheap laptop plan by the same ministry came to nothing.<br /><br />In 2009, it announced plans for a laptop priced as low as $10, raising eyebrows and triggering worldwide media interest.<br /><br />But there was disappointment after the "Sakshat" turned out to be a prototype of a hand-held device, with an unspecified price tag, that never materialised.

Google Map 3D Now Shows You Helicopter View

Google is adding a new "helicopter view" option for directions in <a href="http://maps.google.com/">Google Maps</a>, enabling you to see your trip from above in full 3D glory. Google is making use of its Earth view engine for this and it's a great way of both making people aware that they can see 3D content in Google Maps but also a way making trip planning more fun.<br /><br /><blockquote>"Getting directions is one of the most popular features on Google Maps, whether it be for driving, walking, biking or transit," Paul Yang, a Google Maps engineer, wrote.<br /><br />"Today, we are launching a new feature that allows you to bring your upcoming trip to life, by allowing you to preview your route in 3D," he announced.</blockquote>The feature is now available to all users, but you need the Earth view plugin to make use of it. Enabling the feature is easy. The plugin is available for most browsers on Windows, Google Chrome, Internet Explorer, Firefox, and Mac OS X, Google Chrome, Safari, Firefox. Linux users are out of luck.

"We apologize for any inconvenience or confusion caused to our readers and thank you for reading @usatoday."<br /><br />Script Kiddies previously hit the micro-blogging feeds of <a href="http://prohackingtricks.blogspot.com/2011/07/hackers-compromises-fox-news-twitter.html">Fox News</a> – where they posted a false bulletin on the fictitious assassination of US President Barack Obama – and <a href="http://prohackingtricks.blogspot.com/2011/09/twitter-account-of-nbc-news-hacked.html">NBC News</a>, where they posted false news about an imaginary terrorist attack on New York.<br /><br />It's unclear how the feeds were compromised but weak password security of one type or another is one obvious suspect. The response came after an Australian blogger alleged the site can still snoop on your web surfing after you've signed out.<br /><br />Nik Cubrilovic, concerned about Facebook's approach to privacy, said that logging out doesn’t make a blind bit of difference, adding that Facebook still has ways to potentially track your behavior.<br /><br /><a href="http://nikcub-static.appspot.com/logging-out-of-facebook-is-not-enough">Cubrilovic’s conclusion</a> after examining the behavior of Facebook’s cookies is simple: “Even if you are logged out, Facebook still knows and can track every page you visit.”<br /><br /><blockquote>This is because instead of telling browsers to remove cookies when users log out, Facebook merely "alters" the state of those little parcels of data – including the cookie that stores your account number.<br /><br />As a result, if you happen to pass by a page with a Facebook “like” button, "share" button, “or any other widget”, your information – including your account number – will be sent back to Facebook. And if you log into Facebook from a public terminal, those cookies could be left behind.</blockquote><br />However, Facebook doesn’t agree. In this case, browsers were not directly targeted; rather, attackers exploited the ubiquitous Flash Player browser plug-in. <br /><br />Like the June Flash bug, CVE-2011-2444 was reported to Adobe by Google's security team.<br /><br />Adobe also used almost identical phrasing to describe both CVE-2011-2444 and the June vulnerability in its security advisories.<br /><br />"There are reports that this vulnerability is being exploited in the wild in active targeted attacks designed to trick the user into clicking on a malicious link delivered in an email message," said Adobe in <a href="http://www.adobe.com/support/security/bulletins/apsb11-26.html">Wednesday's advisory</a> as well as the one it published in June. "This universal cross-site scripting issue could be used to take actions on a user's behalf on any website or webmail provider, if the user visits a malicious website."<br /><br />Adobe declined to comment on how the CVE-2011-2444 vulnerability was being exploited and instead referred questions to Google. The latter did not immediately reply to an emailed query.<br /><br />Four of the five other Flash bugs that Adobe patched today could be exploited by attackers to run their malicious code on victimized computers, Adobe said in its advisory.<br /><br />Wednesday's Flash update was the first since Adobe patched <a href="http://www.computerworld.com/s/article/9219028/Google_engineer_Adobe_squabble_over_Flash_bug_credit?">13 bugs</a> on Aug. 9. Adobe has fixed Flash eight times so far this year, including several emergency, or "out-of-band," updates rushed to users because attacks were under way.<br /><br />The patched versions of <a href="http://get.adobe.com/flashplayer/">Flash Player</a> for Windows, Mac, Linux and Solaris can be downloaded from Adobe's Web site. Alternately, users can run Flash's update tool or wait for the software to prompt them that a new version is available.<br /><br />Android users must browse to the Android Market to update Flash.<br /><br />Google silently updated its Chrome browser on Tuesday to include the patched version of Flash Player. Alleged LulzSec, Anonymous hackers arrested

Kretsinger could not be reached for comment.<br /><br />Separately, 47-year-old Christopher Doyon of Mountain View, Calif., was arrested and appeared before Magistrate Judge Howard Lloyd in U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California in San Jose, according to a U.S. Department of Justice statement released this afternoon. Lloyd ordered that a bail study be done and set a court appearance for September 29 at 1:30 p.m. PT.<br /><br />Doyon, who allegedly uses the alias "Commander X," and Joshua John Covelli, 26, of Fairborn, Ohio, were indicted on charges of conspiracy to cause intentional damage to a protected computer, causing intentional damage to a protected computer, and aiding and abetting by participating in a distributed DoS attack on Santa Cruz County servers December 16, 2010, shutting down the Web site. A criminal summons was issued to Covelli, aka "Absolem" or "Toxic," to appear before Magistrate Paul Grewal in San Jose on November 1.<br /><br />In the Sony case, Kretsinger is accused of using proxy services via the hidemyass.com site, designed to offer anonymous Internet access, to probe Sony Pictures Entertainment's computer systems in May, according to the indictment, which was unsealed in U.S. District Court in Los Angeles today.<br /><br />He and other co-conspirators looked for vulnerabilities and exploited them by means of a SQL injection attack between May 27 and June 2, the indictment says. They then allegedly compromised the Sony system, making "tens of thousands of requests for confidential data," and released the information from Sony on a public Web site and on Twitter.<br /><br />Kretsinger permanently erased the hard drive of the computer he used to conduct the attack, the indictment alleges. He is due to make an initial appearance in federal court in Phoenix today. The U.S. government will request that he be transferred to Los Angeles to face prosecution. He faces up to 15 years in prison if convicted.<br /><br />He is alleged to have used the hacker handle "recursion" and is believed to be a member of the LulzSec hacker group.<br /><br />The LulzSec group, believed to be a spinoff of the Anonymous group of online activists, had bragged about <a href="http://prohackingtricks.blogspot.com/2011/05/playstation-network-hackers-access-data.html">breaking into Sony Pictures' system</a>, posting a statement on Pastebin on June 2 and proof of their attack. "We recently broke into SonyPictures.com and compromised over 1,000,000 users' personal information, including passwords, email addresses, home addresses, dates of birth, and all Sony opt-in data associated with their accounts," the statement said. "Among other things, we also compromised all admin details of Sony Pictures (including passwords) along with 75,000 'music codes' and 3.5 million 'music coupons.'"<br /><br />A week later, <a href="http://prohackingtricks.blogspot.com/2011/05/playstation-network-hack-what-every.html">Sony said</a> that actually personally identifiable information of 37,500 customers had been exposed in the breach. The breach was one of a series of attacks targeting Sony and its affiliate sites globally that started in May following a legal spat Sony had with a hacker who had modified his Sony PlayStation 3.<br /><br />In the San Jose cases, the indictments allege that the attack on Santa Cruz County servers was orchestrated by the People's Liberation Front (PLF), which is associated with the Anonymous group. After the city enacted a law restricting camping in city limits, protesters occupied the courthouse premises and several were charged with misdemeanors, the Justice Department said. In retaliation, the PLF organized the DoS attack, the statement alleges.<br /><br />Covelli is also separately under indictment in U.S. District Court for the Northern District for allegedly participating in a distributed DoS attack on PayPal in December 2010. His next court appearance in that case is set for November 1 at 9 a.m. PT before Judge Lowell D. Jensen in San Jose. Neither Doyon nor Covelli could immediately be reached for comment this afternoon.<br /><br />The Justice Department and FBI said they could not comment on the San Jose cases beyond the indictments and statements, so it is unclear exactly where Doyon was arrested. Earlier today, <a href="http://www.foxnews.com/scitech/2011/09/22/fbi-arrests-suspected-lulzsec-and-anonymous-hackers/">Fox News reported</a> that a hacker who is believed to be homeless was arrested in San Francisco on charges of participating in attacks allegedly carried out by activist group Anonymous on Santa Cruz County government Web sites, and that search warrants were being executed in New Jersey, Minnesota, and Montana. An FBI spokesman said that the agency does not typically comment on search warrants.
